Dear Editor,

YES, far too many children in the East End are living in poverty.

Yes, more needs to be done to meet the Government commitment to eradicate child poverty by 2020 (East London Advertiser Letters, October 30).

But the motion put forward by Respect at the last Tower Hamlets Council meeting would have achieved nothing.

As always, Respect shout about the issues, but do not have any suggestions, ideas or policies to back up their words.

The Labour Group tabled an amendment to their motion, not to congratulate ourselves, but to give it substance and a meaningful resolution, leading to the council signing the London Child Poverty Pledge and continuing to develop a strategy based on what we know works.

And yes, the council has been shortlisted for a Beacon award for 'tackling and preventing child poverty' in recognition of the work that already takes place.

Cllr Dulal Uddin's letter acknowledges the good work of the council and voluntary organisations in addressing child poverty. His motion recognises the improved educational results achieved by children in Tower Hamlets, despite the high levels of poverty.

Perhaps he would like to read the Labour Group amendment again and with a clear head might agree it is an improvement on what his party put forward and should be supported.
