Former Southend United defender discusses Orient’s different styles of play ahead of trip to Exeter

Leyton Orient defender Sean Clohessy was always confident the O’s could start the new campaign well and wants them to continue that at Exeter City this weekend.

Ian Hendon’s side are top of the League Two table with five wins from five having only conceded three goals so far and scored a staggering 13 in the division

Jay Simpson has four and Paul McCallum three already as the pair have started the season brilliantly and formed a great partnership.

That has happened all over the pitch and something else that has impressed the Orient vice-captain is their versatility.

“I think a lot of teams have one way of playing - they either pass the ball or maybe they go route one. We have got both options,” said Clohessy.

“We are very much based as a crossing team and sides have got to try and stop us from crossing balls into the box, but we can go long into Paul or we can play round into Jay.

“From the first moment we had 11 v 11 in pre-season I knew we were going to cause other teams problems so I was always confident we would gel quickly.”

Although it has been a summer of change with a huge amount of players leaving, Clohessy and all the other new recruits have settled in well.

Hendon, who was named as Sky Bet manager of the month for August today (Friday), has done a marvellous rebuilding job at Orient.

The former Southend United defender believes the squad the O’s have built is definitely about quality rather than quantity.

Clohessy added: “When I signed there was obviously a lot more players here like Darius Henderson and people like that. It was very exciting signing here.

“I thought if them boys are playing we are going to really romp the league, but obviously one by one they have kind of left.

“But other boys have come in to replace them and from the moment we started training I knew this was a good squad. I have played at this level with Southend and the squad we have here is smaller, but the quality we have is really good.”
