A waste disposal company has had to shell out cash to repair damage after one of its trucks got stuck in the mud in Victoria Park.
Bywaters waste and recycling firm has agreed to hand over £1,200 after one of its drivers took an unexplained foray onto the Park’s turf.
Onlookers were left baffled after the truck was stranded in the mud for hours on the side of one of the roads running through the greenery.
The company’s strategic development manager David Rumble blamed the incident on a temporary member of staff “who wasn’t aware of the circumstances”.
“It was an unfortunate accident that we are taking steps to make sure doesn’t occur again”, he added.
“It was an unadvisable thing to do and the consequences were that we caused damage and were therefore liable. We are paying the full amount asked for by the London borough of Tower Hamlets.”
Pictures of the incident were circulated on social media sites, with one commenter describing the misdemeanour as “too crazy to comprehend”.
The borough council confirmed the compensation package agreed with the company in order for the damage to be repaired.
A spokesperson said: “They have accepted full responsibility and the repairs, which are estimated to cost £1,200, will be paid for by them and carried out as soon as the weather permits.”
Chair of Victoria Park Friends Group Richard Desmond was confident the damage would not be long lasting.
He said: “Victoria Park is an intensely used large urban park from time to time accidental damage occurs but it has shown remarkable resilience over 160 years.
“I believe that the park managers will instigate swift repairs as appropriate.”
