Consumers warned of bogus callers asking for bank details

TRICKSTERS are conning unsuspecting consumers into giving away their personal bank details over the phone, the Ministry of Justice warns. The scam involves calls from bogus officials claiming to be from the Government, the Office of Fair Trading, a high street bank or a legitimate claims management company

TRICKSTERS are conning unsuspecting consumers into giving away their personal bank details over the phone, the Ministry of Justice warns.

The scam involves consumers telephoned by bogus officials claiming to be from the Government, the Office of Fair Trading, a high street bank or a legitimate claims management company.

The tricksters suggest the consumer could receive repayment of bank charges or other debts and ask for bank account details.

But they also ask for 'up front' fees in exchange for codes to release the cash.

The callers have no connection with any Government body or other bona fide organisation, says the alert from the Justice Ministry.

Justice Minister Bridget Prentice said: "There is something particularly despicable about heartless fraudsters who prey on people already struggling with debt.

"People should make sure they are totally confident a company is legitimate before making any payments."

Anyone whop has already been caught in the trap is being urged to contact their bank as soon as possible to stop any unauthorised transactions and to tell police.
