POLICE are still trying to trace a man who jumped into the Shadwell Basin in a bid to save drowning 20-year-old Ibrahim Gharib.

But the water was so cold that he was forced to climb back out almost immediately.

He is described as white, bald headed and aged between 30-40 years and dived into the icy water in an attempt to rescue Mr Gharib around 9.30pm on the evening of Thursday, March 15.

Detectives from the homicide and serious crime command believe that he might have information about what happened immediately prior to Mr Gharib going into the river.

They are continuing to appeal for witnesses and are asking the man and anyone else who can help to call the incident room at Barking on 020 8345 3734 or to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A 20-year-old man has been arrested and has been released on police bail until next Thursday.
