POLICE have swooped on 75 trucks carrying building site waste through the streets of East London in a crackdown on illegal dumping.
Cops and environment officials from Tower Hamlets council stopped vehicles on the A11 Bow Road (pictured) to make sure they had waste transfer permits for building materials or bulky items.
Other stop and search’ operations have also been carried out in the Roman Road and along Wick Lane in Old Ford, near the A12 Blackwall Tunnel approach, where trucks were stopped for spot checks.
The worst problem facing the local authority has been scrap tyres being dumped in the East End. Some have been dumped in Bethnal Green this week behind the railway arches near Cambridge Heath station.
Earlier this year, tyres were dumped on wasteground 200 yards away in Cambridge Crescent. The land had to be cleared and boarded up to prevent fly-tippers returning.
