The 28-year-old was from Cable Street in Shadwell and was with friends on Saturday afternoon when he went into the water at Shadwell Basin.

Police were called at 2.50pm after the man disappeared under the water and despite an extensive operation by diving teams his body was not discovered until 6.15pm.

The death is being treated as unexplained at this stage and an inquest was opened and adjourned at Poplar coroner's court on Tuesday.
