“I remember my lucky grounds, not the unlucky ones. I used to turn up expecting to score.”

I don’t like the phrase ‘six-pointers’ and it’s very early days to be talking like that, but coming home from Wigan with nothing is very disappointing.

I said last week that even if we didn’t play well it’s important not to lose the game, because if West Ham are going to be involved in a relegation battle this season then we know Wigan will be down there too.

Wigan seem to have a bit of a hold over us at the moment, though it’s hard to say why certain teams tend to be ‘bogey’ sides for others.

If you look at the turnover of players we have virtually a completely different side – and a different manager – from the one that lost 3-2 at the DW Stadium and got relegated from the Premier League two seasons ago.

And even this season we fielded seven different players from Saturday’s team when we lost 4-1 at home in the Capital One Cup tie in September.

I don’t think stats of how long it’s been since beating a team tend to play on the minds of players though – it’s just one of those things in football.

I always remember my lucky grounds, never the unlucky ones. I always seemed to score playing at Coventry, Ipswich and Tottenham and so I used to turn up expecting to score there.

But I’m not sure a group of players can collectively have an unlucky ground, we just simply under-performed on Saturday.
