Orient winger wants to achieve positive result at Coventry
Leyton Orient winger Dean Cox believes moving out of the relegation places with victory at Coventry City tonight will give them a big psychological boost in their survival battle.
O’s have been in the bottom four of League One since losing 2-0 to rivals Colchester United on January 24.
But Fabio Liverani’s team have mounted a large charge to beat the drop by winning four of their last eight matches.
Another success at the Ricoh Arena this evening would go a long way to helping them maintain their league status for another year and the 27-year-old, who scored the third goal in Saturday’s 3-1 win against Port Vale, is confident.
“It is another big game and if we can win that we obviously get out of the relegation zone so mentally for us it would be good to get out of it and then push on,” Cox told leytonorient.com.
“Tony Mowbray has gone in and his number one priority is to make Coventry safe.
“He is an experienced manager and has been at a higher level as well. He is doing a good job at the moment, but we are going to try and stop the run they are on and continue ours.”
Orient’s belief should be high following their win over Port Vale at Brisbane Road.
It looked for a while like they could suffer another defeat when Chris Birchall gave the visitors a first half lead.
But David Mooney levelled things up from the penalty spot before Neill Collins put through his own net to put O’s in control.
Mooney wasted the opportunity to make the game safe when Liverani’s team were awarded another spot-kick and his effort was saved.
And it was left to Cox to seal the win with a powerful finish in the 84th minute to the delight of the home faith.
The triumph is just a starting point insists the former Brighton & Hove Albion man and he believes O’s must back up that second half display with a strong showing at Coventry.
“It was a vital three points against Port Vale, but only a start,” Cox added. “We need to keep racking up the wins, as many as we can really.
“First half we weren’t really at the races to be fair, but we came out for the second half a different team and scored some good goals and hopefully we can continue that.”
