A new project will provide support and help to addicts and homeless people who repeatedly beg outside DLR stations to tackle anti-social behaviour in Tower Hamlets.

The initiative by the council and British Transport Police will offer people who beg around stations health, substance misuse and housing support as part of the town hall’s bid to curb the issue.

According to government figures every £1 spent on drug treatment will save £4 in costs to society on associated health or housing costs.

Councillor Asma Begum, cabinet member for community safety, said:

“We are committed to making the streets safer for all our residents, businesses and visitors to the borough.

“This work will help give vulnerable people the tools they need to change their life.”

John Biggs, Mayor of Tower Hamlets, added: “This initiative is targeting individuals who we know are vulnerable – and we will be working across the borough as it is rolled out.”
