A suspect in the doorstep shooting of a Russian banker near Canary Wharf has been arrested in Moscow, it has emerged today.

Detectives investigating the attempted assassination almost a year ago of German Gorbuntsov on the Isle of Dogs in London’s East End have been in touch with Russian authorities, Scotland Yard has confirmed.

Mr Gorbuntsov was gunned down as he entered his luxury apartment block in Byng Street on March 20, seconds after stepping out of a taxi from Liverpool Street station.

He was shot six times in the entrance hall and suffered permanent injuries as a result.

A man said to be a suspect in the attack and involved in another shooting in Romania has been reported as having been arrested in Moscow.

The Romanian media has named him as Vitali Proca who was wanted by Interpol over the attack. Moves were now under way to extradite him from Russia.

Mr Gorbuntsov said in a BBC Crimewatch interview last year: “The worst feeling is that guy shot me and ran away and probably very much hoped he had killed me—this incident has changed my whole life.”

Detectives from the Met Police have been in talks with the authorities in Russia as part of the investigation into the Byng Street shooting. But Scotland Yard would not comment on the name of the suspect.
