A rogue landlord who squeezed 10 tenants into a rat and cockroach infested illegal run-down shack in Poplar has lost a bid to overturn a demolition order.
Mohammed Suruk Miah ignored planning laws and built the illegal extension at the back of his three-storey house in Clutton Street.
When enforcement officers from Tower Hamlets visited the building they found the tenants were sharing a kitchen, shower and two toilets.
In addition there were no fire precautions and Miah had failed to license the House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) as required by law.
He appealed the demolition order claiming it cost him £7,000 to build and it would be costly for it to be dismantled.
However, the case was dismissed at tribunal on the basis that the property posed a significant health and safety hazard.
Cllr Sirajul Islam, cabinet member for housing, said: “This illegal extension presented a serious hazard to tenants.”
