A murder probe is underway after the body of a young man was found in east London.

Police were called when a passer-by spotted the man’s body on the foreshore of the River Lea under the A13 Canning Town Bridge, by East India Dock Road in Poplar, at around 7.25am last Wednesday.

Detectives from the Met’s Homicide and Major Crime Command led by Chief Insp Ken Hughes believe they know the identity of the 21-year-old man, but are still trying to trace his next-of-kin.

A post mortem failed to establish the cause of death, but the man is know to have suffered head injuries, Scotland Yard confirmed today.

A 24-year-old man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to dial 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555111 or Crimestoppers online.
