Detectives continue to appeal for witnesses and information after the stabbing late Friday night on the steps of the boxing venue after a match.

Police were called at 10.30pm and found the man with stab wounds collapsed on the forecourt of the BP petrol station in Cambridge Heath Road opposite.

Paramedics and an ambulance crew tried to save him, but he died an hour later at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel from a stab wound to the chest.

He had been to a boxing match and a dispute is thought to have erupted as two groups were leaving at the end of the evening.

“He got involved in an altercation with numerous people,” a police spokesman said. “It started inside the venue and continued outside.”

The clash spread out onto Cambridge Heath Road towards Bethnal Green Underground station. It began less than 500 yards from Bethnal Green police station in Victoria Park Square.

Some of those involved in the clash took refuge in the Dundee Arms pub to get away from the trouble.

Police are waiting for formal identification before releasing the dead man’s identity. It is understood from local police sources that he was from south London. Next of kin have been informed.

York Hall remained shut over the weekend and part of Old Ford Road was still cordoned off earlier today as forensic officers examined evidence on the steps of York Hall.

Detectives from Scotland Yard’s Homicide and Major Crime Command are keeping an open mind about any motive.

They are appealing for witnesses who were at York Hall or who saw the clash on the street, or anyone with information, to call the incident room on 020-8345 3715, or anonymously on Crimestoppers 0800-555111.

There have been no arrests so far, while investigations continue.
