Thousands of mourners turned out to pay their respects to star pupil Ajmol Alom, who was stabbed to death in the street last month.

An estimated 2,000 people attended a service for the Langdon Park School pupil at the East London Mosque in Whitechapel on Wednesday (September 11).

Teachers, friends, classmates and relatives were among those present at the prayers held to remember Ajmol, who was tragically stabbed to death in an apparently unprovoked attack in Spey Street, Poplar on August 12.

The 16-year-old was described as a “delightful young man” by his headteacher, and would have achieved top grades of eight As and three Bs in his GCSE results.

A 19-year-old man has appeared at the Old Bailey charged with Ajmol’s murder and was remanded in custody until a further hearing on November 4, but police are continuing to appeal for witnesses.
