A man from Mile End has been given a suspended jail sentence for sending death threat tweets to a Conservative politician referring to murdered MP Jo Cox.
Michael McAlpine, 25, urged people to ‘Jo Cox’ Anna Soubry on December 2 last year before he deleted his account to cover his tracks.
However the Tory candidate for Broxtowe had screen grabbed the tweets and reported him to the police.
He admitted sending the messages when he was questioned by police.
Yesterday at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, McAlpine pleaded guilty to two counts of sending a message that was grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing nature.
He was sentenced to 10 weeks in jail suspended for a year, ordered to undertake 200 hours of unpaid work and must pay £500 compensation to Ms Sourby and costs of £150.
Ms Soubry has tweeted she will donate the compensation to the Jo Cox Foundation.
