A man who raped a woman in a car on her way back from a night out has been jailed for 14 years.

Amos Mbonu, 48, of Arrow Road, took his victim to a car park, demanded money and tried to kiss her before raping her in the vehicle in the Barbican area late on October 1 last year.

He was sentenced at Blackfriars Crown Court today after being found guilty of two counts of rape and one charge of supplying class A drugs at a hearing in July.

The victim, a woman in her late teens, had been at a bar in Euston with friends. She left the bar alone at around 11.30pm and took the tube to Barbican.

As she walked along the road, Mbonu began talking to her from inside his car.

The woman, who can not be named for legal reasons, went with Mbonu to a nightclub before they both travelled back to the Barbican area. She said he took her to the car park and raped her after she refused to kiss him.

She then got out of the car, and he drove past her a few minutes later as she approached her apartment.

Detectives investigating the incident quickly identified and arrested Mbonu the next morning. He had saved his phone number on the victim’s mobile phone.

He denied the allegations and was charged on October 3.

Investigation lead Det Con Zoe Di Carlo, from the Met’s Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command, said: “Amos Mbonu is a dangerous offender who preyed on a lone, vulnerable female and took advantage of her in the most horrific way.

“I would like to thank the victim for her unwavering support and courage throughout the investigation.

“Mbonu is now in jail and the public are safer because of that. We would urge any victims of a sexual offence to report contact police, safe in the knowledge that they will be fully supported.”

Mbonu was found not guilty of a fourth charge of rape, actual bodily harm and theft relating to a separate incident in 2001.
