Two brothers are to appear at the Old Bailey following the death of 20-year-old Ibrahim Gharib in the Shadwell Basin dock in London’s East End nearly four years ago.
Ibrahim disappeared following an incident on the dock quayside on the night of March 18, 2010.
It was 12 hours before his body was recovered from the dock by the Met Police marine unit at Wapping nearby.
He was on the quayside with his 17-year-old girlfriend when detectives at the time believed there was an incident and he plunged 20ft into the water.
Two passers-by heard his girlfriend scream and jumped in to try and rescue Ibrahim—but couldn’t find him in the dark.
Ibrahim died less than half-a-mile from the family home at Tarling Street in Shadwell.
His sister Fatima Gharib spoke of the family’s distress over the time it took to recover his body.
Det Insp Brian Mather said soon after the recovery: “We understand the time it took caused distress to the family. But there are limits on when and where we can search at night.”
Detectives the next day questioned two men, aged 20 and 22, before releasing them on police bail.
Two men and a woman appeared on Tuesday at Thames Magistrates’ Court over Ibrahim Gharib’s death at Shadwell Basin in 2010.
Brothers Misba Chowdhury, 23, and Amran Chowdhury, 26, both from Whitney Avenue in Ilford, were summonsed in connection with alleged manslaughter.
Steffi Rai, 26, from of Birmingham, was summonsed in connection with perverting the course of justice.
All three were given conditional bail to appear at the Old Bailey on November 26.
