Four men have admitted stealing £350 intended for the Royal British Legion from the Tower of London’s moat.

They were seen picking up coins from an area in front of Traitor’s Gate at 7pm on Saturday, January 31.

The group attempted to run away when a member of the public shouted at them but were detained by Tower of London staff and army personnel until the police arrived.

Ieronim Cancel, 24, Albert Pruteanu, 19, and 22-year-olds Tarciziu Cancel and Istoc Ionut all admitted theft at Thames Magistrates’ Court and on Tuesday they were all handed a six month conditional discharge and ordered to pay victim surcharges of £16.

The money stolen by the men, all Romanian nationals of no fixed address, was returned to a Yeoman Warder by police officers on Friday.
