A man who stabbed a plain clothes police officer with a 10ins blade in an alley in Bow has been found guilty today at the Old Bailey of GBH with intent.
Andrew Beadie, 20, attacked the officer in an alleyway off Bow Road on November 22 in his second street attack in the area that night.
He was also found guilty by a jury of common assault against an unidentified passer-by who has never been traced, despite police appeals for the man to come forward.
Beadie was armed with at least one knife when he and his partner, a 24-year-old woman, and her twin sons took the DLR from Devons Road one stop to Bow Church.
He punched a man to the ground in an unprovoked attack when they arrived in Bow Road.
The incident was captured on CCTV, but the victim has never traced.
The group went down the alley next to the Bow Bells pub where he accused a second man of looking at his girlfriend.
Beadie then drew out a large knife and repeatedly stabbed him in the stomach before running off.
The man he stabbed was an undercover officer attached to the Met’s Specialist Crime and Operations.
He had three stab wounds and colleagues gave first aid until an ambulance arrived. He recovered in hospital.
When Beadie was arrested a week later his mobile phone was seized where police found an image of a knife snapped two days after the stabbing.
Detectives believe it was the same weapon used to stab the officer, but the knife has never been recovered.
“This was a cowardly, unprovoked and sickening knife attack,”
Det Chief Insp Gary Holmes said after today’s verdict. “We’ll never know what motivated Beadie on a series of violent assaults that night.
“He has shown not a shred of genuine remorse. It’s just sheer luck the injuries to the officer were not life threatening.”
The case against Janine Morris, 24, of Rainhill Way, Bromley-by-Bow, who was charged with attempted murder, affray and assisting an offender, was later discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service.
No further action was taken against three teenagers, aged 16 and 17, who had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Beadie, from Basildon in Essex, is being sentenced on June 16. He was found not guilty of possessing an offensive weapon.
