A notorious Moscow mafia gang was behind the shooting of a Russian banker in Canary Wharf, it has been claimed.
A hitman who allegedly shot 46-year-old German Gorbuntsov six times on the doorstep of his Isle of Dogs flat is believed to have been acting for the mafia gang when carrying out the attack in March last year.
Mr Gorbuntsov is now under 24-hour police protection at a secret location in Britain after narrowly surviving the suspected assassination attempt.
Russian police arrested Moldovan hitman Vitalie Proca last month saying they believed he was behind the shooting.
Reports have now claimed that Proca was acting for a sprawling criminal network in Moldova and Romania, responsible for contract killings, prostitution and drug smuggling.
