Two week-long crackdowns on unwanted sexual behaviour led to 15 individuals being arrested.

One man, aged 32, is on bail after being stopped by officers on Monday last week at Bethnal Green station for a historic sexual assault.

The operation was part of Project Guardian — a joint initiative between the British Transport Police (BTP) and the Met — and took place across London’s public transport network last month.

BTP Superintendent Nicki Watson said: “It’s very encouraging to see that since the launch of Project Guardian, more victims are coming forward to report what’s happened to them and more offenders are being caught.”

Some 120 plain-clothes and uniformed BTP officers patrolled daily between 7am and 11pm along six lines and thirteen stations.

These included the Central line between Mile End and Liverpool Street and the Jubilee line between London Bridge and West Ham.

The project team was formed in April following a TfL safety and security survey that revealed around 15 per cent of females have experienced unwanted sexual behaviour on the network, with around 90 per cent not reporting it to police.

Around 2,000 police officers and PCSOs have now been specially trained to deal with these types of cases.

“Despite these good results we must not become complacent and will be working hard to further tackle inappropriate sexual behaviour on London’s transport network,” said Sup Watson.

“We want victims to know that all reports are taken seriously and we’ll do everything we can to bring offenders to justice.

“If someone has made you feel uncomfortable on your tube, rail or bus journey — however minor it may seem to you — reporting it to police can help us target the perpetrator and prevent it happening to another passenger.”

To report an incident of a sexual nature to British Transport Police call 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016 with details of what happened.

For an incident outside for the railway network call 101 or, in an emergency, dial 999.
