Scotland Yard have requested further information about allegations of electoral fraud in Tower Hamlets and are considering whether to carry out an investigation.
It comes after six of the borough’s Labour councillors wrote to the Electoral Commission last week warning of “serious abuses of the electoral register”. The commission then referred the matter to police.
The councillors also raised concerned about voting irregularities at the recent the Spitalfields and Banglatown by-election and warned similar activities are occurring in Weavers where a by-election will be held this Thursday (May 3) to coincide with the London Mayoral election.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “We received the letter last week and are seeking further information. We are currently considering whether to carry out an investigation.”
