Local residents frightened by recent attacks in Wapping Woods, which saw two lone women stabbed in broad daylight, are being urged to attend a public meeting about community safety.

Tower Hamlets police, who are hosting the event that will also be attended by council bosses, have charged a 32-year-old man with two counts of attempted murder.

A Tower Hamlets police spokesman confirmed the meeting is designed to “reassure” residents following the stabbings in the woods off Garnet Road, on December 4 and 29.

But he added: “It is not allowed to discuss the details of the specific attacks for which a man has been charged as that would prejudice court proceedings.

“However, there will be an opportunity for the community to question the police and council on general safety issues that this case has brought to the attention of the public.”

The meeting, which will be chaired by the safer neighbouhood team’s Insp Steve Cook, will be attended by the Borough Commander, Ch Supt Dave Stringer, Tower Hamlets Council’s head of community safety, Andy Bamber, and the head of the culture, learning and leisure department, Heather Bonfield.

Insp Cook said: “The meeting is open to anyone who has concerns about safety in the area.

“The high profile nature of the incidents has aroused much public interest and it is hoped that by bringing people together we can hear from local people directly and take appropriate action.”

The meeting will take place at St George’s Town Hall, 236 Cable Street, Shadwell, on Tuesday, January 8, from 7pm until 8.30pm.
