An investigation is under way into police professional standards following a road crash in east London when four pedestrians were injured by flying debris from a road crash involving a police car and a motorbike.
The pedestrians, all men, were among seven people hurt in yesterday afternoon’s collision in Poplar High Street, along with two police officers in the car and the motorcyclist.
Two of the pedestrians are in serious conditions in hospital.
The accident has been referred to the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards, Scotland Yard confirmed this-morning.
Police were responding to an automatic number plate reader activation in Poplar when the patrol car was in collision with the bike at 1.22pm at the High Street junction with Cotton Street.
The 27-year-old motorcyclist was taken to the Royal London Hospital at Whitechapel with suspected “life threatening” head and leg injuries. But his condition is now considered stable.
The two officers in the car, a man and woman, were taken to hospital with minor injuries, but were not detained.
The four pedestrians were hit by flying debris from the crash, police said.
Two were said to be seriously hurt, but the other two were discharged after treatment.
No arrests have been made, although the accident is being looked into by the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Chadwell Heath as well as being reported to its Professional Standards Directorate and the Police Complaints Commission.
Witnesses or anyone with information about yesterday’s crash is being urged to call the Investigation Unit on 020-8597 4874, or the police non-emergency line on 101.
