Residents have been warned to beware opening their doors to unexpected callers after a burglar claimed to be a police officer to gain entry.

The man, who was wearing a navy blue/black jumper with the word “police” written on it in white, said he needed to speak to the occupants of the property in Hannibal Road, E1, about some “found” money.

But after the two male occupants, in their 80s, let the man into the address, he walked around several of the rooms and asked to see their money before taking it.

Police are asking anyone who saw the man in the area on April 4, at about 5.45pm, to contact them.

He is described as white, aged between 45 and 55 years, 5ft 7ins tall and of very slim build. He had black hair and “piercing” brown eyes.

Tower Hamlets police would like to remind the public that police officers always carry identification and will show their warrant cards to the public.

Do not open your door to any unexpected callers and if you are suspicious ask them to wait outside while you check they are who they say they are.

Anyone with information about the incident should call Detective Constable Helen Nickels at Tower Hamlets Police on 020 82173 772 or via 101 quoting reference CRIS 4208119/14.
