Crossrail has won the London Infrastructure civil engineering award for managing to build Canary Wharf station beneath the docks and for restoring an old Victorian tunnel in east London.
The award for design and construction was presented last night at the Institute of Civil Engineering by BBC London’s Alice Bhandhukravi.
It recognised projects with tough civil engineering challenges, including “the tight logistics and substructure technology” of sinking a complete station into Canary Wharf’s West India Dock and also preserving and refurbishing Silvertown’s 150-year-old Connaught Tunnel under the Royal Docks.
Deputy London Mayor Victoria Borwick said: “These projects generated training and career development for our future civil engineers which also utilised the best of our British supply chain.”
Crossrail also scooped the People’s Choice award, with 3,600 votes by the public for “London’s favourite civil engineering project”.
The award for Greatest Contribution to London went to London Underground for three upgrade schemes.
