The parents of the young woman killed on a ‘Boris’ bike in east London are today flying to Britain to formally identify her.

The 20-year-old cyclist was fatally injured at 6.20pm on Friday outside Aldgate East Underground station at the notoriously-busy Gardiner’s Corner five-way junction where the A11 Whitechapel High Street crosses Commercial Street, Leman Street and the A13 Commercial Road.

It was the first of two serious accidents involving cyclists in east London within 24 hours.

The woman was living in Bow, two miles from the accident. Her parents are arriving today from the Continent after being contacted by Scotland Yard, it is understood.

She was taken by ambulance to the nearby Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel after the rush-hour accident, but was dead on arrival.

The accident involving a goods lorry happened while she was riding a Barclays cycle hire bike, nicknamed ‘Boris Bikes’ after London Mayor Boris Johnson introduced them in 2010, and was travelling along a cycle ‘super highway’ blue painted route along the A11 between Aldgate and Bow.

A post mortem has not yet been held. The lorry driver stopped after the accident. He was not arrested, according to Scotland Yard.

It is the first fatality involving a ‘Boris Bike’ since they were introduced in 2010, Transport for London said.

Police investigating the cause and also looking into a second accident involving as cyclist in east London within 24 hours.

A man was critically injured at 5.20pm on Saturday at Clapton Common at the junction with Stamford Hill involving a bus.

He was taken to the Royal London Hospital where his condition has been described as critical.

The Met’s Investigation Unit at Chadwell Heath is appealing for witnesses to both accidents at Whitechapel and Clapton Common to call 020-8597 4874.
