The father of a bank intern found dead in a Bethnal Green flat after reportedly working all night three times in a row has called for better protection for employees.

German student Moritz Erhardt, 21, died in August when he was nearing the end of an internship at a Canary Wharf bank.

His body was reportedly found in the shower at a flat in Claredale Street, after returning there during the seven week internship.

And his 51-year-old father, Dr Hans-Georg Dieterle, told the Evening Standard that the government should do more to protect employees.

“The loss of our son has been very difficult and we are still in hard times,” he said.

“It’s for the [British] Government to look for a solution for rules, for a law which protects employees like there is in Germany. Something needs to change.

“There is a law here which protects us in a sufficient way no matter what your job is. This probably would not happen in Germany.”

The findings of a post-mortem examination of Mr Erhardt, who was working at investment bank Merryl Lynch Bank of America, are still unknown, but he was reported to have suffered epileptic fits in the past.

Following the tragic death, the bank announced a review into its working practices.
