O’s manager full of praise for supporters after Brisbane Road club endured a difficult week before beating Newport County 4-0 on Saturday
Danny Webb praised the professionalism of his Leyton Orient players after putting a bad week behind them to claim a stunning 4-0 win at Newport County on Saturday.
Steven Alzate opened the scoring at Rodney Parade after just eight minutes before Josh Koroma struck a first-half brace.
Koroma then completed his hat-trick in the 64th minute to hand O’s an emphatic win just days after being served a winding-up petition by HM Revenue and Customs.
“You can’t sweep the winding-up petition under the carpet, so you’ve got to address it with the players,” said Webb.
“I can’t be like ‘let’s not talk about it’ - you have to face facts and these things do come up and I’ve seen it at other clubs.
“Sometimes it peters into nothing and sometimes it means oblivion, so I know that is the case and hopefully it is the first option.
“The players have stayed professional. The ones who didn’t travel have stayed professionals and the injured lads too.
“All I can ask when we come in on Monday – win, lose or draw – is that we show a bit of life in training.”
News broke on Wednesday that Orient were set to appear in court on March 20 over an unpaid tax bill.
It had been a terrible week for the O’s, but Webb and his squad ensured they finished with a positive note in Wales.
395 supporters made the trip to Newport and the Orient manager hailed their loyalty and positivity at Rodney Parade.
Webb added: “It has not been nice for them. I’ve been here four or five years and some of them have been fans for 50 or 60 years.
“I am not for one minute trying to put myself in the same boat as them and their emotions because this club is everything to them.
“We are employees and this club to the supporters is their life and soul, so to come to Newport in the numbers they did and cheer and show support is beyond me.
“They didn’t show an ounce of negativity either on Saturday and they are an absolute credit to themselves.”
Orient’s display last weekend was sensational with the youngster taking the headlines, but the experienced members of the squad playing an equally crucial role.
It showed the O’s players are not going to go down without a fight and they closed the gap between themselves and safety to five points.
Webb admitted for the time being everybody at the club has to try and remain focused until any further news comes out.
He said: “I haven’t spoken to the chairman since the winding-up petition went public, but all I can say is the player and staff wages went in on time.
“As the days and weeks go on, hopefully we will know a bit more about the next step, but obviously that is out of our hands.”
Webb can control matters on the pitch and once again showed on Saturday that he is doing a fine job of keeping spirits high at Brisbane Road.
