Former under-18 manager keen to know what the long-term plan is at Brisbane Road, so he can start chucking more youth back into the starting XI
Leyton Orient manager Danny Webb is going to try and seek answers from chairman Francesco Becchetti this week over the long-term future of the club.
The O’s boss expressed his frustration at being left in limbo following Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Crawley Town.
Orient are bottom of the League Two table and seven points from safety with only seven games left this season.
Webb said: “I am certainly going to try and ask the chairman questions. We are all in limbo. I am out of contract at the end of the season and the frustrating thing is I am trying to think ahead and think about the future when I am not guaranteed a future.
“If I sign a big six-year contract on silly money then I could keep reading the script every week, but I am not like that. I have put my neck on the line knowing we are going to have a hell of a lot more defeats than wins.
“After Newport County, I could see that everybody was excited and it was great, but I could see a lot more days like this one at Crawley were not too far down the line.
“That is why I have always spoken about the bigger picture and the season to come, so I am certainly going to be asking questions of the chairman.
“I know the next six weeks are going to go quickly and I need to make sure there is not so much negativity that it turns a lot of fans the other way.
“We have just got them being a little bit positive and we have got to make sure we keep them that way to a degree, even if we go down, so we start next season on an up compared to a down.”
The Orient manager discussed how once he knows what the plan is for the future, his team selections can reflect that.
Webb introduced teenager Henry Ochieng for his league debut on Saturday and then compared him to Chelsea’s Kante.
It appears the 33-year-old has grown frustrated with some of O’s underperforming experienced players and would like to give more youth a chance.
But until his philosophy is backed by Orient’s board, the former under-18 boss is reluctant to chuck them into the firing line again.
“As soon as somebody comes out and says ‘this is where we are going, this list of players are staying and this list of players are going’ then if you are straight with people they can’t get the hump,” said Webb.
“The sooner that happens and then I can say Henry you are starting this match, Josh (Koroma) you are going to start more. I can say Aron (Pollock) you might make a few mistakes, but you are going to keep playing until you stop making them.
“That is what we have to go through sooner or later to build something and it is easy when Manchester United try and build something because they have players worth millions to help them through it.
“At our level, and especially where we are at the moment, it takes a lot more guts to try and build something. I said before I have taken over when the club was facing downwards and I am trying to show people a little bit of light.
“I am trying to show people that these young lads will play and run through brick walls for the fans and for me and the club. It would be now nice if we had a little bit of support on that philosophy.”
