Sailing enthusiast David Franks has been presented with the Royal Yachting Association’s prestigious Outstanding Contribution award by Princess Anne.

David, who lives by the Thames waterfront at Wapping, was recognised for his efforts in keeping the Etchells racing fleet buoyant in 2008 at the point when yacht-racing events were being cancelled due to lack of numbers.

Yachting Association chief executive Sarah Treseder said: “This award recognises David’s enthusiasm in promoting sailing as a sport and his many years’ contribution to the boating scene.”

David stepped in and set up a campaign to drive the Etchells fleet back to full strength, reenergising the traditional sailors and introducing a complete new generation to the sport.

He came up with the idea of fully-funded keelboats for under 24-year-olds and single-handedly organised funds for youth trials in 2012 and for boats for two youth teams—one team has gone on to win European Youth championships.
