Developers have signed a deal this week for a new 30-storey Premier Inn hotel complex after getting the planning green light on a site that's been derelict since the financial crash of 2008.

Developers have signed a deal for a new 30-storey Premier Inn hotel complex after getting the planning green-light on a site that’s been derelict since the financial crash of 2008.

The deal announced by Rockwell Properties today was given the go-ahead for a hotel by Tower Hamlets Council in October next to Westferry DLR station, a site left abandoned for 10 years.

Premier Inn’s parent company Whitbread has taken a 30-year lease on the development that includes a restaurant, shops and residential accommodation.

Premier Inn’s Louise Woodruff said: “This will be our tallest hotel in the UK and our largest in London apart from those at Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

“It meets the demand we’re experiencing in east London and especially around Canary Wharf.”

The hotel is taking 28 floors of the tower in West India Dock Road, alongside 66 apartments, shops, half-an-acre of gardens, an urban arboretum and children’s play space.

The height has had to be modified from a scheme rejected last year. Rockwell bought the land and decided not to go ahead with the original scheme agreed back in 2010. But their own proposal had to be modified which was finally approved in October.

The developers are putting up £7 million in infrastructure levy for area improvements. Construction is due to start next summer.
