A derelict building in Whitechapel was badly damaged by fire last night.

The mezzanine level of the two storey building in Osborn Street was destroyed and part of the roof was also damaged.

Four fire engines and around 20 firefighters from Whitechapel, Shoreditch and Shadwell fire stations were at the scene after the London Fire Brigade was called at 8.45pm. The fire was under control by 10pm.

At this stage fire investigators believe the fire was caused by a candle.
