A developer has said it was “shocked” by footage that emerged last week appearing to show a large chunk of concrete hurtling towards an onlooking construction worker during the demolition of a Poplar tower block.

Footage obtained by a national newspaper shows a slab of concrete fire over the barriers separating the building site with the pavement, straight towards a construction worker looking on from behind the barrier.

This follows the death of Michaela Boor on March 29 after being hit by bricks dropped from a crane on a Mile End construction site.

Swan Housing, who are demolishing the Robin Hood Gardens site, asked contractor Hill Partnerships to carry out no further work until they were “reassured that all appropriate health and safety measures are in place”, according to a spokesman.

The site remains closed today.

The spokesman adds: “The site remains closed today. Hill Partnerships are currently undertaking a rigorous investigation and have confirmed that they are liaising with the Health and Safety Executive who have attended the site.

“In the meantime, we would like to stress that we have a rigorous health and safety regime in place to protect workers and the public and expect all our contractors to maintain the highest standards of health and safety.”
