Protesters calling for action to “clean up London’s polluted air” blocked Tower Bridge with a protest disco dance.
The campaigning revellers danced with banners on the roadway, blocking traffic in both directions after last night’s rush-hour.
It was their third demo in four months targeted at the iconic world heritage bridge next to The Tower of London and City Hall.
But they were swiftly interrupted with the quickstep by police officers and marched off the roadway “dance floor”.
One protester was arrested, but later released without charge, according to the ‘Stop Killing Londoners’ protest group.
“The Mayor of London’s proposals to reduce emissions by 80 per cent by 2025 is a mind-boggling low priority,” organiser Calum Harris told the East London Advertiser.
“We protested because it’s unacceptable that 10,000 Londoners die every year from pollution.
“Thousands of children also suffer asthma and shrunken lungs—they deserve better than this.”
The Mayor’s consultation on pollution finishes today, with the campaigners claiming the authorities are dragging their feet.
“The government and the Mayor’s office are making mockery of the rule of law,” Callum added. “They are ignoring statute and legal rulings from the Supreme Court by failing to address the air pollution.”
The campaigners intend continuing their street protests. They first blocked Tower Bridge in October for an hour, bringing traffic to a gridlock which stretched back to Tower Hill and Aldgate. Seven protesters were arrested.
The group also forced another traffic blockade last month.
Meanwhile, City Hall’s online consultation closes today.
