Signals engineer Kevin Thomas is a wizard at running the railways on time who has now been put in charge of east London’s big automatic ‘train set’—the DLR.
He has been appointed new managing director of Serco Docklands, the DLR’s operator, the company announced last night (Thurs).
Kevin, a signalling and telecommunications engineer by training, has been promoted from Engineering & Projects director to be the company’s top boss after its fleet of driverless trains hit 99 per cent running within three minutes of schedule during last summer’s Olympics.
“We ran the most reliable service in our history,” Kevin beamed. “We played a key role in London’s Olympic transport story—but want to do even better in the year ahead.”
His computer-controlled fleet reached an average 98.5 per cent punctuality last year, peaking at 99 per cent during the Games and the months after—making 2012 the best year since the DLR first opened in 1987.
