Commuters across Tower Hamlets are set to face further misery if a 48 hour DLR strike goes ahead next week.

The walkout by workers in the RMT union is due to begin at 4am on Wednesday and run until 4am on Friday.

The action is due to a row between staff and KeolisAmey Docklands, who run the DLR.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “Following feedback from well-attended branch meetings and the ballot result, the company should be under no illusions about RMT members’ determination to fight against detrimental changes to terms and conditions.

“These include secondments without members’ consent or agreement, new and inferior policies on maternity and paternity leave, longer waiting period for entitlement to full sick pay and a failure by the company to deal with a list of outstanding health and safety issues.”

The action is due to affect all routes on the DLR network.

Although there are no drivers on the automated trains, each one has a passenger service agent who can manually control it when necessary as well as providing help and assistance to travellers.

A spokesman for KeolisAmey Docklands said: “Talks with the RMT union are still ongoing with the aim of resolving this dispute.

“If this strike goes ahead DLR services will be affected, although we will run as many trains as possible.”

Managing director Kevin Thomas added: “I’m very disappointed that the RMT has announced strike action on the DLR, as we have been working hard to address their issues and have made genuine progress, with further talks planned. We will continue to do all we can to address the issues important to our employees and to avoid unnecessary disruption for our passengers.”
