THE company that operates East London’s DLR automatic driverless rail network is to run the capital’s cycle hire’ scheme being introduced next summer.
The company, Serco, has emerged as the successful bidder for the �140 million franchise to set up and operate the scheme, Transport for London announced today (Wednesday).
The franchise is for six years, with revenue paid directly to City Hall.
DOCKING SITES
The deal comes as City Hall revealed that a-quarter of the 400 cycle docking station sites, where people will pick up and drop off the bikes, have already received planning permission.
The scheme starts with 6,000 hire bicycles across nine Inner London boroughs including Tower Hamlets and several Royal parks that make up the Zone-1 travel area. It is expected to generate around 40,000 extra cycle trips a day in central London.
The London Cycle Hire scheme will be based on the award-winning Canadian cycle hire scheme, which began in Montreal earlier this year, but not identical to it.
