WORKERS on the Docklands Light Railway are to strike for two days next week, they announced today.

Transport Union RMT said staff voted in a majority of 82 per cent for the strike, which will start in the early hours of Thursday January 20 and lasting until the end of service on Saturday 22.

They have accused operator Serco Docklands of not consulting members over redundancies, new pensions arrangements and new working hours.

They are also angry about the sacking of two of their colleagues, Julian Harper and Ian Peavot.

Serco said it had made “genuine attempts” to resolve the issues.

Two sessions of talks are planned for next week.

RMT is also pushing for a 35 hour working week as part of the action.

The union’s general secretary Bob Crow said workers “have no option” but to strike.

He added: “Our members have shown through a massive vote for action that they will not be bullied and treated with contempt.”

David Stretch, Serco’s managing director, said the issues were not easy to agree, adding: “It is extremely frustrating to see the RMT union announce strike dates when we have agreed to hold further talks to try and genuinely resolve the issues raised.”

Serco said it will do all it can to solve the dispute.
