A MAJOR hospital in East London in an area with one of the country's worst infant mortality rates has received a double 'excellent' rating for the second year in the national 'health' check.

The rating was awarded to Homerton Hospital by the Care Quality Commission for the services it provides to patients and its record of financial management.

"These are terrific results for us," said hospital chief executive Nancy Hallett. "Foundation Trust status allows us freedom to invest 10 million in new facilities for IVF treatment and the mother and baby centre which is soon to open."

The Commission's report on all NHS services across the country, out this-morning, says 'The Homerton' is the only acute medical hospital in London to retain the double award.

The medical service for its local population was 'excellent,' says the Commission. So, too, was the financial management with the trust being assessed as "performing strongly with a relatively low financial risk.
