Furniture designers in Shoreditch has won the prestigious ‘Heart of the City’ award for helping a ‘safe haven’ for victims of human trafficking and slavery.

The accolade went to the Dovetail furnishing design consultancy at last night’s Lord Mayor’s Dragon awards for its work with the Helen Bamber foundation.

The company donated labour and materials to the foundation totalling £265,000 to help open its victims’ refuge in Camden Town. Dovetail normally supplies and installs furniture for commercial clients, turning empty space into creative environments.

The Bamber Foundation is a human rights charity that has helped victims from 90 countries since 2005 with specialist therapists, doctors and legal experts. It has a reputation for therapeutic care, medical consultation, legal protection and support, working with victims of entrapment, rape and torture.

The Dragon awards organised by the City of London Corporation are the longest-running awards for corporate social responsibility, now in their 27th year, given to commercial firms with a conscience and compassion for the community.
