A driver was trapped when his Mercedes overturned in a night-time crash in the A12 Blackwall Tunnel.
The vehicle was coming out of the tunnel when it ploughed into a barrier, ending up on its side, on the northbound carriageway at the Poplar turn-off approaching the A13 East India Dock Road at 1am on Sunday.
The driver was trapped by his legs and had to be rescued by emergency crews using special cutting gear to remove the roof before paramedics could treat him. The man was later taken by ambulance to hospital with severe leg injuries.
Crews were called in from Shadwell, Poplar, Bethnal Green and Greenwich fire-stations. No other vehicle was involved in the accident.
