TWO women motorists were injured in a crash in the A12 Blackwall Tunnel in East London.

Other motorists helped the women out of their smashed cars after the collision late on Saturday night as rescue crews were delayed getting to the scene.

Both the twin tunnels had to be closed after the accident at 11pm so that fire crews from Poplar and Silvertown could reach them, but the women were helped by the other drivers.

“We had to drive south through the northbound tunnel then turn round at the other end to get to the crash,” said a senior fire brigade officer. “The southbound tunnel was blocked with traffic after the crash, making it impossible to get through.”

The two women were taken to hospital with suspected neck and back injuries, but were not thought to be seriously hurt. The tunnel was reopened at midnight after their cars, a Golf and a Mini, were towed away.
