Tower Hamlets Council is urging drivers to ditch their cars next Thursday in support of its ongoing Breathe Clean campaign.
Residents are being asked to either walk, cycle or take public transport to work on 21 June, which is Clean Air Day, as part of the town hall’s battle against air pollution.
The borough currently has the fifth worst air pollution in London which also exceeds UK and European UK air quality levels.
John Biggs, mayor of Tower Hamlets, said: “Clean Air Day gives us a great focus to think about what we can all do, individually and collectively, to reduce air pollution and help prevent the terrible health issues it can cause to children and vulnerable people.
“Pollution is one of the biggest issues facing London, and that’s why we are committed to doing all we can to reduce it. I would urge residents and businesses to come along to one of our events, or to support the council’s campaign to Breathe Clean.”
