Police and officers from Tower Hamlets Home (THH), which manages social housing on behalf of the council, stormed several addresses at a Latham House in Chudleigh Street, yesterday in a clampdown on drug dealing in the area.

In addition to the drugs thrown out of the window, more were uncovered at the same address and a dangerous weapon.

A one-bedroom flat in the block showed no signs of being used as a home but appeared to have been converted into base to store and sell drugs.

THH has started legal proceeding to evict the tenant.

The intelligence-led raids are the latest by THH in a crackdown on drug dealing and other criminality at properties it manages since last October.

To date 20 people have been arrested, 411 warnings issued and two vehicles have been seized.

In addition a barber’s shop in Mile End, which was being used as a crime den, and a cannabis farm, have also been shut down as part of the crackdown.

Susmita Sen, chief executive of THH, said: “Residents tell us that anti-social behaviour is their biggest concern and our joint working with our own police team shows our huge determination to tackle the issue.

“We’ve already seen the impressive results working with our police team and we will continue our efforts to stop people who are attempting to destroy our communities and the threatened the quality of life for the vast majority of our law-abiding residents.”

Superintendent Peter Turner, from Tower Hamlets Police, added: “The police team are seeing fantastic results in addressing anti-social behaviour. This is an excellent example of what can be achieved when we work together with Tower Hamlets Homes and all our partners.”
