ACCLAIMED actor Sir Ian McKellen picked up the movie Icon award at the Empire film magazine prize-giving.

The actor who lives in Limehouse, was presented with the award for his body of film work which includes X Men, the Da Vinci Code, Richard III. He is perhaps best known to audiences for his role as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

He is currently appearing as Estragon in Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket.
