The world is celebrating the 140th birthday of spiritual leader Mahatma Gandhi today - who was the most famous resident of Kingsley Hall.

He stayed at the centre in Powis Road, Bromley by Bow when he visited London to participate in the Round Table Conference in 1931.

Gandhi rejected the offer of accommodation in hotels in the West end, choosing instead to be near working class people.

He was besieged by admirers during his stay and famously had a goat with him to provide him with milk.

Kingsley Hall was a setting for Richard Attenborough's biopic Gandhi and is the home of the Gandhi Foundation.
