A demolition scheme to pull down 25 disused railway arches to make way for student accommodation in London’s East End has won an environment regeneration award.
Network Rail’s ‘Viaduct’ project next to Queen Mary University’s Mile End campus has been given a Green Organisation ‘Apple’ award for recycling construction material, minimising waste, creating a ‘green roof’ to encourage bio-diversity and reducing carbon emissions.
The development by Keltbray specialist contractors in a deal with the university and Tower Hamlets Council includes accommodation for more than 400 students, outdoor sports facilities, storage buildings and community allotments where railway sidings used to be on the Liverpool Street main-line. Some of the surplus land is also earmarked for space to increase wildlife habitat.
The Green Apple awards were started in 1994 to promote environmental ‘best practice’ around the world.
