WRITERS who have captured the history and memories of the East End will be signing their books at a family history fair tomorrow.
WRITERS who have captured the history and memories of London’s East End will be signing their books at a family history fair today.
Among them are Derek Houghton who in his book A Bethnal Green Memoir’, published last year, recalled the East End of the 1930s and 50s.
Through anecdotes he describes a neighbourhood undergoing enormous social changes and how the war ruptured people’s lives. Locations such as the Hackney Empire, Pellicci's cafe and Kelly's Pie and Mash Shop provide a backdrop through his childhood and teenage years.
Houghton is joined by other writers such as Gilda O'Neill, author of My East End’, and Fiona Rule who will be signing copies of her new book London's Docklands’ at the Family History Fair at Eastbury Comprehensive School in Wilmington Gardens Barking, 9am to 5pm.. There are 150 stalls with 30 history and family societies taking part.
